Velma B's Beauty Academy was first named "Madame Walkers' Beauty College". The College, being the first black beauty college in Dallas, Texas, was establish in 1939 by Madame C. J. Walker an African American Millionaires. Ms. Velma Brooks purchased "Madame Walkers' Beauty College" July 1971. In 1975 the college was renamed Velma B's Beauty Academy.

The name change came after Ms. Brooks became a student of "Madame Walkers' Beauty College" in 1957, later a full-time instructor at the college, an owner of 2 hair salons, receipent of the 1974 International Rose D'or Award in Pairs, France, and the World's Hairstyling Champion for the United States of America that same year.

Beginning with 12 students and now with over 3,000 alumni, the Academy believes their best teaching tool has been through travel. Students have attended and competed in beauty shows across the United States.

In 1981 the Directorship of the Beauty Academy was passed on to Terry Brooks, Ms. Velma Brooks' son.

Mr. Brooks a graduate of the college and succesful stylist, furthered his career as an inspector of beauty schools and salons for the state of Texas were he acquired an excellent working knowledge of the beauty industry that has enhanced the Academy.

The Academy's primary goals has been to encourage and train young cosmetologist in the future of the haircare industry and to maintain the revitalization of the school.
